The following diagram illustrates the basic strategy for socially responsible economic development:
By addressing the issues which contribute to improving the "Quality of Life" for all mankind , we can begin to solve the problems of crime, drugs, poverty, famine, and health which plague our communities. Businesses can focus their resources on approaching these issues from an economic perspective, similar to the attitude demonstrated by Control Data in it's investment programs.
Dr. Worthy, Board of Directors, Control Data Corporation, in an recent interview for educational television, describing Control Data's investments in the community, stated that his company sought to "..address unmet needs of society...each of these investments is approached as a business...managers of projects in these areas are just as accountable as other business managers...". This attitude is demonstrated in the wide range of projects which Control Data supports, as illustrated by the following examples:
This economic approach to providing for the "unmet needs of society"
is an alternative to unwieldy and ineffective government
systems. The incentives for involvement in businesses of
this type include both economic and social benefits.
